About sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis or Besnier Boeck disease is a rare and enigmatic disorder, in which an overactive immune system starts to form nodules of immune cells (called granulomas) throughout the body. Under a microscope these nodules look like in the picture above. As they cluster in patients, granulomas may interfere with the proper functioning of organs and tissues, causing symptoms both specific and generic.

European opportunities
Eurosarcoidosis covers the twenty-seven countries of the European Union plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Together these countries have 525 million inhabitants. Such an economy of scale may benefit a rare disease like sarcoidosis, if the interests of patients and scientists from across the continent can be better aligned with those of potential donors.
