Eurosarcoidosis to sponsor ERS travel grants for young sarcoidosis investigators

Woerden, Netherlands, 3 June 2024 — Starting in 2024, Eurosarcoidosis will make two annual travel grants available for young investigators working in the area of sarcoidosis. The winners will be decided by the European Respiratory Society.

The ILD committee of the European Respiratory Society has accepted a proposal by Eurosarcoidosis for the first awards ceremony to take place during the annual ERS convention in Vienna from 7 to 11 September 2024. Winners will be selected from relevant papers submitted to the ERS convention.

Founded in 2020, Eurosarcoidosis, the Eurosarcoidosis Research Fund, aims to create a European fund for sarcoidosis research. To this end the Fund executes a multi-year step-by-step approach to engage donors and other stakeholders for sarcoidosis research. In addition, Eurosarcoidosis advocates the creation of similar sarcoidosis research funds across the world, especially in emerging markets.

Sarcoidosis or Besnier Boeck disease is a rare and disabling chronic inflammatory disorder with no known cause and no cure. Nodules of inflammatory cells, called granulomas, may interfere with the proper functioning of any organ or tissue. Fatigue is a hallmark of the disease, which may continue even after inflammatory activity itself has abated. Mortality, mostly due to pulmonary and cardiac complications, ranges between six and eight per cent.
